Miami Marlins right-hander Dan Straily was suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions in Tuesday’s game against the San Francisco Giants, Major League Baseball announced Thursday.

Warnings had already been issued to both teams when Straily plunked San Francisco catcher Buster Posey with a pitch in the second inning of the contest. Straily and Marlins manager Don Mattingly were immediately ejected.

Mattingly was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount, MLB announced.

Straily’s suspension will begin Friday against the Colorado Rockies unless he appeals, which he will according the Miami Herald’s Clark Spencer. If the reliever does appeal, Mattingly’s suspension wouldn’t begin until the same day as a future starting date for Straily, if any.

Tensions were high entering Tuesday’s game after Miami outfielder Lewis Brinson delivered a game-tying single in Monday’s game off Giants reliever Hunter Strickland. The two exchanged words as Strickland was removed from the game and Strickland punched a door a short time later and broke his pitching hand.

When Brinson came up in the second inning on Tuesday, he was beaned by Giants right-hander Dereck Rodriguez. The warnings were issued to both teams after Brinson was hit.

Straily denied throwing at Posey after the contest, saying “I just lost a fastball in.”
