Green Bay Packers right tackle Bryan Bulaga was activated from the physically unable to perform list on Friday, almost nine months after tearing his right ACL.

“He just passed his physical today, so Bryan Bulaga will practice in a limited return mode,” said Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy said last week he was hopeful Bulaga could return to the starting lineup for the regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 9. Now that he’s returning to practice, Bulaga could even get some preseason playing time.

Bulaga, 29, was placed on injured reserve with a torn ACL in his right knee in November. He was hurt Nov. 6 against the Detroit Lions.

Veteran right tackle Byron Bell was signed as insurance at tackle. Bulaga also torn his left ACL in 2013.

Drafted 23rd overall by the Packers in 2010, Bulaga is entering the fourth year of a five-year, $33.75 million contract. He’s slated to make $6. 3 million this season and $6.75 million next season. He’s started 81 of the 85 games he’s appeared in, only coming off the bench four times as a rookie.

The only offensive lineman the Packers drafted was fifth-round pick Cole Madison, who was a surprising no-show for training camp. McCarthy would only say Madison’s absence was a personal issue. General manager Brian Gutekunst said Madison projects to guard in the NFL.
