Report: Niners won't pursue high-profile quarterback

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t expected to pursue a high-profile quarterback in the wake of the devastating injury suffered by Jimmy Garoppolo, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Instead, they plan to stick with C.J. Beathard, who started five games as a rookie last season before being replaced by trade acquisition Garoppolo.

The second-year pro begins his second stint as San Francisco’s starting quarterback on Sunday when the reeling 49ers (1-2) visit the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

While some have called for the 49ers to pursue a trade for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles or bring back Colin Kaepernick, team sources reportedly expect Beathard to be much improved after studying coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense for a full offseason.

“He’s got a whole offseason (in Shanahan’s system). I think there will be a night and day difference. He’s not Garappolo, but I think he’ll be productive,” Schefter quoted a team source as saying.

Beathard finished his rookie season with 1,430 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions, starting five of the seven games played.

Garoppolo tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in last Sunday’s defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers promoted Nick Mullens from the practice squad to be the backup.
