Yamil Asad will return to MLS for a third time, under a contract with D.C. United, but he will not take the field until the start of the start of next season, the Washington Post reported.
The midfielder, who has played on loan for Atlanta United FC (2017) and D.C. United (2018), has agreed to a new contract with D.C. United for 2020 after his contract with Argentina side Velez Sarsfield expired in July.
With rosters frozen, though, and Asad out of fitness after not playing for two months, D.C. United will have to wait until next season to put its new midfielder into the mix. The team will lose striker Wayne Rooney at the end of this season after the veteran returns to second-tier Derby County in England.
Asad scored nine goals with eight assists for Atlanta United FC and had seven goals and 13 assists for D.C. United. He has played 62 career games in MLS. In the interim, Asad will sign a short-term deal to play for Louden United, D.C. United’s USL team, which has 10 games remaining this season.
