Trudeau reacts to ethics report, says he cannot apologize for standing up for Canadian jobs

OTTAWA, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday said he took responsibility for the findings of an ethics report that found he improperly acted to influence a corporate legal case, but he refused to apologize and said he acted to defend Canadian jobs.

“I take full responsibility. The buck stops with the prime minister,” Trudeau told reporters in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, adding: “I cannot apologize for standing up for Canadian jobs.”

Earlier in the day, independent ethics commissioner Mario Dion said Trudeau and his team had attempted to undermine a decision by federal prosecutors that construction company SNC-Lavalin Group Inc should face trial on corruption charges. (Reporting by Steve Scherer; editing by Grant McCool)
