Drugmaker AstraZeneca, determined to show it has a strong independent future after seeing off a $118 billion bid from Pfizer in May, said it had made good progress in developing a pipeline of new drugs.

Pfizer said separately that a deal to buy rights to a promising drug from Germany’s Merck KGaA will enable it to compete strongly in the fast-growing field of cancer immunotherapy.
