The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.17 percent at 17,632.64, the S&P 500 was up 0.11 percent at 2,051.77 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.21 percent at 4,805.846.

** VALSPAR CORP, $103.84, +23.87 pct

** SHERWIN-WILLIAMS CO, $274.23, -5.01 pct

Valspar’s shares are set to open at a record high after rival Sherwin-Williams said on Sunday it would acquire the paint maker in an all-cash deal valued at about $9.3 bln, or $113 per share.


** MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL INC, $72.02, -1.56 pct

Marriott said it made a higher offer for Starwood that was accepted by the owner of the Sheraton and Westin hotel brands.


The embattled Canadian drugmaker said Chief Executive Michael Pearson would step down and that the company had appointed activist investor William Ackman to its board.

** IHS INC, $119.62, +8.05 pct

** MARKIT LTD, $32.93, +11.67 pct

U.S. business research provider IHS said it would buy Markit in an all-stock deal valuing the London-based financial data company at about $5.9 billion.


BioMarin’s drug met the main goal of reducing a toxic buildup of an amino acid in the blood of patients with a genetic disorder, but did not show benefit in related inattention and mood complications.

** THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC INC, $139.84, -0.11 pct

Affymetrix, a DNA-based test maker, rejected a $1.5 billion bid by Origin Technologies Corp, supporting the $1.3 bln Thermo Fisher merger deal.

** EXPRESS SCRIPTS HOLDING CO, $69.9, +0.62 pct

** ANTHEM INC, $139.43, -2.28 pct

Health insurer Anthem filed a lawsuit against pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts to recover damages for pharmacy pricing that was higher than competitive benchmark pricing

** OVASCIENCE INC, $10.7095, +22.53 pct

The fertility treatment’s provider’s stock recorded its best day in 1 1/2 years after Chief Executive Michelle Dipp bought 59,700 shares last week for prices ranging between $7.61-$8.96 per share, according to a regulatory filing

** EAGLE PHARMACEUTICALS INC, $41.1, -5.52 pct

RBC Capital Markets cuts the drugmaker’s price target to $94 from $100 after U.S. FDA on Friday rejected its blood thinner, designed for certain patients undergoing heart surgery.

** INTEL CORP, $32.26, -1.29 pct

Sanford C. Bernstein cut the world’s largest chipmaker’s rating to “underperform” from “market perform” and price target to $26 from $29; Deutsche Bank trimmed to $37 from $38.

** NEW YORK MORTGAGE TRUST INC, $5.025, +7.60 pct
