Jan 22 (Reuters) - Some U.S. stocks to watch on Tuesday:
U.S. stock index futures were flat on Tuesday as investors held back from making large bets ahead of an onslaught of corporate earnings and after recently notching five-year highs. S&P 500 futures rose 0.3 point but remained below fair value. Dow Jones industrial average futures fell 8 points and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 5 points.
** CATERPILLAR INC, Friday close $97.62, down 1.8 pct premarket
The world’s largest maker of tractors and excavators said on Friday it had uncovered “deliberate, multi-year, coordinated accounting misconduct” at a subsidiary of a Chinese company it acquired last summer, leading it to write off most of the value of the deal and wiping out more than half its expected earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012.
** VERIZON COMMUNICATIONS INC, Friday close $42.54, down 3 pct premarket
The U.S. telecommunications group posted a $1.93 billion quarterly loss on pension liabilities and superstorm Sandy-related charges that took the shine off a jump in wireless business revenue.
** TRAVELERS COS INC, Friday close $76.31
The property insurer posted a lower quarterly profit, hurt by losses from superstorm Sandy. The company’s net profit fell to $304 million, or 78 cents per share, in the fourth quarter from $618 million, or $1.51 per share, a year earlier.
** DUPONT, Friday close $46.99, up 2 pct premarket
Weak demand for paint pigment and solar panel parts eroded the chemical maker’s fourth-quarter profit, with Chief Executive Ellen Kullman tempering expectations for those once-lucrative markets due to “significant challenges.”
** SEACUBE CONTAINER LEASING LTD $22.71, up 12 pct after market
Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, one of Canada’s largest pension funds, said on Friday it will buy SeaCube for about $467 million.
** RESEARCH IN MOTION LTD, Friday close $15.84, up 6 pct premarket
The Canadian smartphone maker’s shares rose after its chief executive said the company’s ongoing review could potentially lead to the sale of its handset business or the licensing of its software to rival smartphone companies.
** GENERAL MOTORS CO, Friday close $29.28
The Canadian Auto Workers union is recommending that workers at a GM plant in southern Ontario accept the company’s request to start bargaining for a new contract, months ahead of the September expiration of the current deal in the hope that doing so will help secure jobs.
** OM GROUP INC, Friday close $23.18
The specialty chemicals company said it will exit its core advanced materials business and sell its downstream part to a joint venture led by Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc in a deal valued at up to $435 million.
** EXXON MOBIL CORP, Friday close $90.80
The oil company has asked Iraq’s prime minister if it can keep running a huge southern oilfield despite disagreements over rival contracts signed with the country’s autonomous Kurdistan region, the government said on Monday.
** WAL-MART STORES INC, Friday close $69.20
The retailers’ Canadian unit will invest $450 million to expand its distribution network to take on impending competition from nearest rival Target Corp.
** DELL INC, Friday close $12.84, down 2.65 pct premarket
Dell, which has been in buyout talks with Silver Lake Partners, has hired Evercore Partners Inc to explore the possibility of other deals, Bloomberg News reported. Dell expects shareholder lawsuits if a deal is announced, the report said quoting unnamed sources. (link.reuters.com/wem45t)
** MAGICJACK VOCALTEC LTD, Friday close $15.17, down 5 pct after market
A law firm said on Friday it filed a class action lawsuit against the internet-based phone services provider and some of its officers for making misleading statements about the company's business and policies. ** PROGENICS PHARMACEUTICALS INC, Friday close $2.83
The company said it bought privately owned Molecular Insight Pharmaceuticals to gain access to its cancer treatments. Progenics said it exchanged about 4.6 million shares of its common stock for all the outstanding shares of Molecular Insight.
** KRISPY KREME DOUGHNUTS INC, Friday close $12.08, up 2 pct after market
