U.S. stocks rose on Wednesday, with the Dow advancing to a record high after the Republican Party took control of the Senate in the midterm elections, as expected, and following a stronger-than-anticipated report on the labor market. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.38 percent at 17,449.53, the S&P 500 was up 0.38 percent at 2,019.74 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.09 percent at 4,627.798.

Shares of oil & gas and coal companies rose in anticipation that a Republican takeover of U.S. Senate on Tuesday could lead to legislative measures that directly affect the energy sector.

The company reported a 3 percent rise in quarterly revenue, helped by growth in its Turner Networks unit and premium TV service Home Box Office (HBO).

The largest U.S. power company by market value reported a 27 percent rise in third-quarter profit, helped by increased pricing and the reversal of an impairment charge recognized in the first quarter.

The restaurant operator cut its 2014 profit forecast late on Tuesday, blaming higher food costs.
