BUZZ-U.S. STOCKS ON THE MOVE-Coal stocks, First Niagara, Sharps

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 0.35 percent at 16,273.91, the S&P 500 was down 0.15 percent at 1,939.79 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.04 percent at 4,758.41.

** HERON THERAPEUTICS INC, $40.17, +19.70 pct

The drug developer said its experimental pain drug met the main goal of a mid-stage study. At least four brokerages raise price targets on Heron by as much as $19 to as high as $58; median price target is $47.

** SIGNAL GENETICS INC, $1.4399, +8.26 pct

The diagnostic services provider inks an agreement with a major biopharmaceutical company to use its testing services for clinical studies.

** ABENGOA SA, $5.3994, +25.28 pct

** ABENGOA YIELD PLC , $18.71, +6.67 pct

Spanish renewable energy company Abengoa is close to a deal with creditor banks on its planned 650 mln euro ($725 million) capital increase, three sources with direct knowledge of matter said. Abengoa Yield is Abengoa’s unit.


The drug developer said its experimental combination therapy for pancreatic cancer was not effective in a mid-stage study.

** FIRST NIAGARA FINANCIAL CO, $10.205, +13.90 pct

The Buffalo-based lender explores a sale. The bank hires JP Morgan to advise on possible moves, according to Bloomberg, citing people who asked to remain anonymous because the talks are private.

** BIOMED REALTY TRUST INC, $21.91, +14.23 pct

BioMed, a real estate investment trust for biotechnology companies, is in talks to sell itself and has attracted interest from private equity firm Blackstone Group, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

** RADIUS HEALTH INC, $71.45, +8.72 pct

The drug developer says it will update on safety and tolerability of its cancer treatment on a conference call on Thursday.

** SHARPS COMPLIANCE CORP, $9.69, +9.86 pct

Stifel raises the medical waste management company’s price target to $11 from $8. Sharp is “well positioned to accelerate revenue”, helped by support from increasing government contracts, Stifel says.

** BAYTEX ENERGY CORP, $3.52, -9.97 pct

Analysts at CIBC downgrade the Canadian oil and gas producer’s Toronto-listed stock to “sector performer” from “sector outperformer”.

** ARCH COAL INC, $2.77, -12.06 pct

** PEABODY ENERGY CORP, $1.142, -4.03 pct

** SUNCOKE ENERGY INC, $8.67, -10.53 pct

** CLOUD PEAK ENERGY INC, $2.58, -3.73 pct

** CONSOL ENERGY INC, $11.21, -6.97 pct

** WESTMORELAND COAL CO, $13.53, -4.58 pct

** HALLADOR ENERGY CO, $6.995, -5.35 pct

Shares of coal producers down as coal futures trade at $50 a tonne for the first time since 2003. Coal will never gain traction to lift it out of its slump, Goldman Sachs analysts said.

The heart device maker says first surgical procedures were performed in the United States using its Vmotion catheter device.

** CTI BIOPHARMA CORP, $1.565, +8.68 pct
