Canada Afghan mission a confidence matter: Liberals

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper told Liberal Opposition Leader Stephane Dion that an upcoming vote on extending Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan would be treated as a matter of confidence, which could trigger an election, a spokeswoman for Dion said on Wednesday.

“The PM told Mr. Dion it would be a confidence matter,” Leslie Swartman told Reuters.

Harper and Dion met on Tuesday night to discuss the Afghan issue.

Harper’s Conservatives were elected with a minority government in 2006.
