Canada denies report on Black Sea ship

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada denied a report on Tuesday by a Russian defense official that Ottawa planned to send a warship into the Black Sea in the context of the Russian conflict with Georgia.

“As of right now there are no current plans to send Canadian ships to the Black Sea,” said Jillian Van Acker, spokeswoman for the Department of National Defence.

Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy chief of the Russian military’s general staff, had told a Moscow news briefing that the Russian military had information that U.S., Polish and Canadian warships were planning to enter the Black Sea, on which Georgia has a coast.
