Canadian police find five dead in home

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Two small children and three adults were found dead in a suburban Calgary house on Wednesday in what police are calling a domestic homicide, without releasing details of how they were killed.

Officers also found a one-year-old girl alive in the home, located in a well-kept neighborhood in the Western Canadian city, when they entered to check on the residents at mid-morning.

Among the dead are two girls, ages four and six, as well as two women and one man, all said to be in their 30s, Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson said. One of the adults was living in the home as a tenant.

“This incident is not believed to be random in nature,” Hanson said.

Officers were alerted to the scene by a relative who had arrived to pick up one of the girls, he said.

The baby was unharmed and taken away by to be cared for temporarily by social services.

Police did not release names and would say only that the cause of the deaths was unnatural.

“We don’t know anything about the event at this time, whether it was or was not a murder, a murder-suicide,” police spokesman Frank Reuser told reporters at the scene.

“It’s not a very pleasant crime scene, so to speak,” he said, struggling to maintain his composure.

The bodies were discovered in the Dalhousie neighborhood in Calgary’s northwest. The leafy street is lined with modest, well-tended homes.

Mia Albino, a neighbor who lives a few doors from the house said her children have often played with the kids living there. Albino described the family as church-going and active in the community.

“They weren’t a family that did anything crazy,” she said.

Police said they do not believe the public is in danger.
