Harper to meet governor general on Thursday

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Wednesday he will meet with the country’s titular head of state, the governor general, at 9:30 a.m. (1430 GMT) on Thursday, suggesting he will ask for a suspension of Parliament.

Governor General Michaelle Jean is the representative of Queen Elizabeth, Canada’s head of state, and has the final word on constitutional matters.

Harper has promised to use “every legal means” at his disposal to block a plan by opposition parties to replace his minority Conservative government.
