Seth MacFarlane will let - gasp - college students touch Oscars

NEW YORK ( - So this is the kind of lowbrow vulgarity we get when we allow the creator of “The Family Guy” to host the Oscars: Seth MacFarlane will let the golden statuettes be handled by - brace yourself - college students.

We’ll give you a moment to unclutch your pearls.

For an episode of MTVu’s “Stand In” series, in which celebrities visit college classes, MacFarlane talks to a group of UCLA film students about his work. He also announces the details of “The Oscar Experience College Search,” which will be presented by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and mtvU.

Winners of the contest will appear on the Oscar show, where they will deliver statuettes to celebrity presenters, inevitably touching them in the process.

“In re-imagining what we want the Oscar show to be, we wanted everyone appearing on that stage to feel a deep commitment to film and its legacy, and most importantly, its future,” said telecast producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

Added MacFarlane: “For a film student to go to the Oscars and be a part of presenting is a huge break.”

The Oscar Experience College Search will be featured on The Academy’s Facebook page through January 19. College students entering the contest will need to upload a video saying how they wll contribute to the future of movies. At least six winners will be flown to Los Angeles to participate in the 85th Academy Awards on Oscar Sunday, February 24.

No word on whether the students will be checked for lice and required to wear gloves.

MacFarlane’s episode of “Stand In” will premiere on December 10 at 10/9c.
