LONDON (Reuters) - Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm said on Friday she is expecting her first baby, the last member of the top-selling band to become a mother.
The 34-year-old, nicknamed "Sporty Spice," and her partner Thomas Starr announced the news in a statement on her website, www.melaniec.net, after days of speculation.
"Well, I can now announce that Tom and I are expecting a baby and we are very happy," she said. "I'll be taking it easy. I'll need some time off to be a mum, but before you know it, we'll be back."
The other band members, Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown and Emma Bunton, have seven children between them.
The Spice Girls were one of the biggest pop acts of the 1990s, with hits such as "Wannabe," "Mama" and "Spice Up Your Life."
