NEW YORK (Billboard) - Memphis garage-punk artist Jimmie Lee Lindsey, better known as Jay Reatard, was found dead in his Memphis home Wednesday. He was 29.
Goner Records, which released a number of Reatard’s singles and EPs, posted a statement on its Web site: “It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night.”
Reatard was known for his energy, prolific output and outlandish stage behavior. His most recent album, “Watch Me Fall,” was released to critical acclaim last August on Matador Records.
In an interview with Billboard Magazine last summer, Reatard said that “Watch Me Fall” was about “dealing with mortality issues, growing older, disenchantment with your youth.”
