LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - MTV has added a “global superstar” category to its 2010 MTV Movie Awards and is asking fans around the world for the first time to help choose the winner, organizers said on Monday.
Two other categories are being added to the irreverent awards show this year — “best ass-kicking star” and a new entry in the thriller and horror genre for “best scared-as s**t performance”.
MTV said fans also will decide for the second year on nominees for their favorite movies, performances, villains, and shocking moments in 13 categories by voting online from Monday until April 9 on www.MovieAwards.MTV.com.
Voting will go international with fans around the world choosing their favorite “global superstar” through their local MTV websites in Europe and elsewhere.
MTV fans also will vote later online for the winners, with balloting for the top award — best movie — staying live throughout the televised 2010 MTV Movie Awards ceremony on June 6 in Los Angeles.
“Handing over the voting to our devoted movie fans is sure to generate a passionate debate over this year’s epic films. And this year, fans worldwide will get to participate in the process,” said Stephen Friedman, general manager of MTV.
