Stewart and Colbert plan spoof of Tea Party rally

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In an apparent spoof of the recent Tea Party rally in Washington, America’s leading satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will hold rallies on the National Mall days before the November election.

Daily Show host Stewart — who satirizes political news from a Democratic viewpoint — announced details of his “Rally to Restore Sanity” on his website on Friday, saying it was for those “who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive and terrible for your throat.”

He said he hoped to attract an audience which believes it is only right to draw a Hitler mustache on someone “when that person is actually Hitler” — a reference to posters seen at Tea Party rallies depicting U.S. President Barack Obama with a Hitler mustache.

The Colbert Report host said his “March to Keep Fear Alive” will be held at the same time. Both rallies are planned for the Saturday before the November 2 mid-term election, October 30 — a date Stewart insists has “no significance whatsoever.”

Colbert said in a statement that he encourages followers to “restore truthiness” in Washington and challenge those who wish “to replace our Fear with reason.”

“But never forget — ‘Reason’ is just one letter away from “Treason,” said Colbert, who spoofs Republican-leaning chat show hosts.

Three weeks ago, conservative pundit Glenn Beck and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the de facto leader of the Tea Party movement, held a rally to “Restore Honor.”

The event attracted some 200,000 conservatives and but drew criticism for being held on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s famed “I have a dream” speech.
