LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Comedy “Little Fockers” took in $7.2 million from 3,536 theaters on Thursday to claim the top spot at U.S. and Canadian box offices and boost its two-day ticket sales to $14.4 million, according to studio estimates.
While topping the box office chart just ahead of the lucrative holiday weekend, “Little Fockers” is running well behind its predecessor “Meet the Fockers,” which debuted during the same time frame in 2004. In its first two days, “Meet the Fockers” raked in $24.4 million.
Disney’s 3D holiday offering “Tron: Legacy” came in No. 2 on Thursday, grossing an estimated $6.1 million from 3,531 locations for a total $68.2 million in its first seven days.
Western “True Grit” placed No. 3, grossing roughly $5.7 million from 3,047 theaters for a two-day total of at least $11.2 million. Family cartoon “Yogi Bear” grossed $3.3 million to come in No. 4 and boost its seven-day total to $28 million.
Among specialty offerings, Oscar hopeful “Black Swan” remained an audience favorite, coming in No. 7 with a gross of $1.8 million from 1,462 theaters for a cumulative total of $22.4 million.
Theater traffic is expected to drop off dramatically on Friday, then pick up on the afternoon of Christmas Day when new offerings include 3D family adventure “Gulliver’s Travels.”
