Bond racks up another big weekend at UK box office

LONDON (Reuters) - The new James Bond film “Quantum of Solace” enjoyed another big-grossing weekend in Britain, taking 9.2 million pounds ($14.29 million) and consolidating its position as box office No. 1.

The 22nd official Bond film has now earned 31.4 million pounds in its two-week UK run, as Daniel Craig in his second outing as 007 creates mayhem in South America and Europe.

In its opening weekend, the film earned 15.4 million pounds, eclipsing the previous UK record of 14.9 million set by “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” in 2005.

“High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” with Zac Efron, Vanessa Anne Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale stayed at No. 2 while Ricky Gervais was up one at three as the cantankerous dentist in “Ghost Town.”

Horror movie “Saw V” was down one place at four.

Edward Norton and Colin Farrell came in at five with “Pride and Glory,” a story of corruption and commitment among New York cops.

Oliver Stone’s biopic of George W. Bush, “W,” with Josh Brolin as the 43rd president of the United States, was new at six while “Burn After Reading,” with Brad Pitt and George Clooney was down two at seven.

The week’s other newcomer, romantic comedy “Easy Virtue,” opened at eight with its reworking of Noel Coward’s play set among the inter-war British aristocracy.

The animated evil scientists of “Igor” were down three at nine and “Hunger” featuring six weeks in the life of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, was unchanged at 10.
