Tea, cash, to lure UK Bobbies home from Down Under

CANBERRA (Reuters Life!) - Who wants a sunny, sandy beach instead of pebbly shores, or a latte instead of a nice cup of tea?

Police in Britain are appealing to nostalgia for all things British in a campaign to call ex-Bobbies back from the sunny south seas nations of Australia and New Zealand, where hundreds have set up home.

And if that doesn’t work, then a resettlement package of 10,000 pounds ($15,000) for anyone who returns to Britain might change their minds.

The ad campaign by the Leicestershire police force targets emigrant police’s memories of calming cups of English tea and cool weather.

But prising police from Australia — the country of choice for British emigres, attracting just under 40,000 Britons in 2007 — may not be so easy.

“You can drink lattes instead of tea and have the occasional beer ice cold,” South Australia Police Deputy Commissioner Gary Burns told the Adelaide Advertiser newspaper, where the ad debuted.

“(You can) enjoy a day at the beach sitting on sand instead of pebbles.”

About 400 Bobbies have flocked to South Australia state’s capital of Adelaide and other towns since 2005, drawn by the promise of warmer weather and pristine beaches.

Neighboring New Zealand has attracted another 330 British cops to its police force since July 2006.

An extra 32 former British officers were formally admitted to the South Australian police force this week, with another 70 to be accepted by June 2009.
