LOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) - British pop band Simply Red had to cancel a live TV performance in Brazil after lead singer Mick Hucknall’s plane to Rio de Janeiro had to be diverted for an emergency landing.

The band, which is on a world tour to promote an album of its greatest hits of the past 25 years, said Hucknall was on route from Buenos Aires in Argentina to appear on the TV Show ‘Domingao do Faustao’ in Rio when the pressure in the cabin fell and the oxygen masks failed to come down.

“The plane had to make a quick descent from 35,000 feet to 5,000 feet and was left without enough fuel to continue its journey to Rio,” said a statement on the band’s website.

The plane had to make an emergency landing in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo but then there were no flight connections to get Hucknall to Rio on time so they canceled their performance.

The band said Hucknall was advised to rest to allow his throat and ears time to recover.

Hucknall expressed his regret at not being able to perform on the show but was in “good spirits” and said he was looking forward to playing the band’s two shows in Sao Paulo and one show in Rio.
