U.S. reporter wins Gucci award for Iraq film script

VENICE (Reuters Life!) - U.S. journalist Mark Boal won this year’s Gucci Group award for his screenplay of “The Hurt Locker,” a powerful 2008 movie about U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

The film, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, is based on Boal’s reporting in 2004 as an embedded journalist with a bomb disposal squad in Baghdad.

As the squad takes risks beyond the call of duty, the film explores soldiers’ addiction to danger in a time when most armies are full of volunteers rather than draftees.

“The movie means a world to me, and hopefully it can show people an unseen side of the war,” Boal said receiving the award, handed out on the sidelines of the Venice film festival.

Since 2006, the Gucci Group award honors artists who have made a remarkable contribution to a film in the previous 18 months.
