Cypriot police charge mum after boy racer car chase

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cypriot police who pursued a car speeding at more than twice the legal limit were surprised to discover they really were chasing a “boy racer.”

The 12-year-old driver — who hit speeds up to 110 km (68 miles) per hour in a 50 km zone — ignored police warnings to stop and almost knocked down a policewoman, authorities said.

The under-aged driver also stormed through a traffic circle (roundabout) in the wrong direction, creating havoc for oncoming motorists in a scene worthy of a Hollywood action film.

His mother has been charged with failing to properly secure her vehicle, but the long arm of the law fell short of a conviction for the child because of his age.

“He cannot be charged because he is a minor,” a police spokesman said.
