NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) - If you are looking for the best city to raise a family in the United States, head to Des Moines in Iowa.

That Midwestern metropolitan area was named the best city for families by Forbes.com because of its good schools, reasonable housing, short commuting times and sense of community.

Harrisburg-Carlisle in Pennsylvania came in second, followed by Rochester and Syracuse in New York and Provo-Orem in Utah.

“The top 10 cities for families aren’t flashy. Most don’t draw throngs of tourists or boast enviable night life. But then that’s not what most families are looking for,” according to Forbes.com.

It based its selection on housing costs, commuting time, crime rate, cost of living, prevalence of home ownership and the number of high school graduates using government data and other information.

Six of the top 10 cities were in the Northeast. Syracuse scored top marks for its educational benefits. Rochester had short commutes, with only about three percent of its residents traveling an hour or more to work, and Harrisburg-Carlisle attracted votes for education, cost of living, commuting and education.

Knoxville in Tennessee was the only southern city to make the list, which can be found at www.forbes.com.
