Receiving a less-than-stellar 360-degree review can be upsetting, especially when the negative feedback is echoed by several people. But how you handle a bad 360 is far more important than the content of the review itself. Here are three tips for turning your negative experience around:
1. Reflect before reacting. It’s far too easy to be defensive. Let the results sink in before you do anything. Does the feedback ring true? Does it resonate with things you’ve heard in the past?
2. Decide what to change. You don’t have to respond to everything. Getting much better at one thing is far better than slightly improving on several dimensions. Decide which feedback is most important to you as a leader and focus on that.
3. Ask for help. Once you’ve committed to changing, ask your manager, peers, or direct reports to help you by giving you feedback. Invite them to call you out when you are falling back into old patterns.
