Management Tip of the Day: For public speaking, be yourself

BOSTON (Reuters Life!) - Many executive coaches have urged leaders to communicate more powerfully through examples from the acting profession, but channeling Meryl Streep may not be the answer, says Harvard Business Review.

The Management Tip of the Day offers quick, practical management tips and ideas from Harvard Business Review and HBR.org (www.hbr.org). Any opinions expressed are not endorsed by Reuters.

“Those who find public speaking daunting — and who doesn’t to some degree? — may think they need to become better actors to improve. Acting rarely helps, though. Don’t try to be someone else or channel a smooth-talking alter ego.

Instead, focus on being exactly who you are. While some people may be natural public speakers, most have to work hard at it. Practice organizing your thoughts, modulating your voice, and connecting with your audience.

This isn’t a matter of rehearsing what you’re going to say. It’s practicing the skills that allow you to be flexible and capable every time you are up in the front of the room.”
