David Suchet, Derek Jacobi win UK theatre awards

LONDON (Reuters) - David Suchet, best known for his portrayal of detective Hercule Poirot in the British television series, was named top stage actor of 2010 at the Critics’ Circle Theater Awards in London on Tuesday.

The 64-year-old was named for his performance in “All My Sons” at the Apollo Theater.

Derek Jacobi, 72, scooped the award for best Shakespearean performance in “King Lear” at Donmar Warehouse.

The director of the same play, Michael Grandage, won best director jointly with Thea Sharrock for “After the Dance” at the National Theater.

Collecting the best actress prize was Jenny Jules in “Ruined” at the Almeida Theater, a role she is to reprise at the Arena Stage in Washington.

Best new play went to the Royal Court’s “Clybourne Park,” Bruce Norris’ examination of racial prejudice set in Chicago. Best musical was awarded to “Matilda, A Musical,” staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company and based on the Roald Dahl novel.

Following is the list of winners at the Critics’ Circle Theater Awards 2010:

- Best new play: Clybourne Park

- Best musical: Matilda, A Musical

- Best actor: David Suchet in All My Sons

- Best actress: Jenny Jules in Ruined

- Best Shakespearean performance: Derek Jacobi in King Lear

- Best director (awarded jointly): Michael Grandage for King Lear; Thea Sharrock for After The Dance

- Best designer: Bunny Christie for The White Guard

- Most promising playwright: Anya Reiss for Spur Of The Moment

- Most promising newcomer: Daniel Kaluuya in Sucker Punch
