SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Whether it’s firm planning or just wishful thinking, bloggers have started swapping tips on vacation spots for 2009 with Paris, London and New York leading, while some travellers are looking to stay closer to home.
Zeta Interactive, a digital marketing services company, has found the 10 most “buzzworthy” travel destinations in the 30 days before 2009, using a formula measuring volumes of online posts on that destination and the tone — positive or negative — of the post.
CEO Al DiGuido said it not surprising that as temperatures plummeted in North America and Europe, bloggers started to talk about hot weather holidays and beach vacations with Sydney, Las Vegas and San Juan in Puerto Rico making the list.
“There are a lot of people in sub-zero temperatures in the northeast of the United States right now wanting to be on beaches right now,” DiGuido told Reuters
But he said it was not just the weather guiding people’s vacation planning but also the economic situation with people looking closely at exchange rates to get the most for their money and considering vacations nearer to home.
Three U.S. destinations made the top 5 — New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles — compared to only Las Vegas ranked in the top 5 “buzzworthy” destinations for all 2008.
The list for 2008 was led by Melbourne with Tokyo and Hawaii rounding out the top three but these all dropped out of the top 10 for 2009.
DiGuido said times had changed.
“With Paris and London, perhaps travellers are taking advantage of the U.S.’s favourable exchangerate,” he said.
