BERLIN (Reuters Life!) - Mattresses shaped to look like slabs of the Berlin Wall — complete with slogans and graffiti — have been created by a trio of local artists to help mark the 20th anniversary of its demise.
The designers came up with the idea for “Mauermatratzen” (Wall mattresses) and “Berlin Wall guest beds” after the city called on artists to come up with designs to celebrate the November 9, 1989 collapse of the Wall that split East and West Germany.
“The Wall divided people so we liked the idea of turning it around by making furniture which brings people together,” Juliane Zoeller, one of the designers, told Reuters on Friday.
The beds — which are pieces of art and not really bedroom furniture — have been exhibited in London and Berlin.
“We thought we could tackle the subject without taking it too seriously,” she said.
