"Steel" shines as polished Sydney dining destination

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Utilitarian and cold are words often associated with steel, but in Sydney, the newly opened “Steel Bar and Grill” is hot and trendy, mainly because what you see is what you get.

Situated in the heart of the business district, the funky, cavernous restaurant made largely of steel and mesh offers diners a polished environment and food cooked in a central open kitchen by executive chef Damian Heads, who has worked at some of most sought-after eateries in Sydney, London and France.

Heads is also a regular on TV cooking shows.

Visitors can walk into the cellar with its huge metallic racks that holds up to 3,000 bottles and stroll past the glass-fronted store-room where all the fresh produce is kept.

“We’ve got nothing to hide here, everything is on display, what you see is what you get,” the restaurant’s director, George Kyprianou, told Reuters.

“There’s so much eye candy in the venue and it’s part of the dining experience that you witness everything, see the whole theatrics,” he added.

In addition to the steel mosaic tiles, steel handbasins and toilets and the steel-framed fish tanks, the restaurant’s design uses other, earthier materials such as wood and stone which help to temper the industrial edge.

Diners can sit perched at the kitchen counter and watch their food being made or at any of the tables inside and outside.

“Wherever you sit, you can really feel what’s going on,” Kyprianou said, adding that patrons include businesspeople as well as weekend suburban guests enjoying a night out.

Steel offers a reasonably priced, and varied, menu of Asian, modern and Australian specialties such as grilled steaks, Thai beef salad and olives marinated in herbs and garlic.

There are also platters to share and desserts ranging from warm chocolate and almond cake to pavlovas.
