UPDATE 1-Air Canada follows WestJet with 2nd bag fee

* Fee takes effect from Jan. 19

* Doesn’t affect U.S., European flights

VANCOUVER, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Air Canada ACa.TO ACb.TO said on Wednesday it will start charging economy passengers C$20 ($20) for a second checked bag on domestic flights and flights to the Caribbean and Mexico.

The announcement comes a week after WestJet Airlines Ltd (WJA.TO), Air Canada’s biggest domestic rival, introduced its second bag fee.

Air Canada’s charge, like WestJet’s, takes effect for travel from Jan. 19. The first checked bag flies without charge.

Air Canada’s second bag policy for flights to and from the United States, Europe and other international destinations remains unchanged, it said. It currently charges C$30 or more, depending on the destination.

The charges are in line with those of airlines internationally and come as carriers look for new sources of revenue as they emerge from a bruising travel slowdown during the economic recession.
