TORONTO, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Empire Co Ltd (EMPa.TO) reported a higher but slightly less-than-expected, quarterly profit on Friday, underpinned by gains at its core Sobeys supermarket unit, Canada’s No. 2 grocery chain.
Empire said it earned C$89.7 million, or C$1.31 a share, in its first quarter, up from C$75.7 million, or C$1.15, in the same period last year.
Excluding items, the company earned C$72.2 million, or C$1.05 per share, compared with C$70.9 million C$1.08 per share a year earlier. Revenue rose 5.3 percent to C$3.91 billion.
Analysts, on average, were expecting earnings of C$1.06 a share and revenue of C$3.92 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.
