BCE cuts staff, spending on agencies, real estate

OTTAWA, Feb 11 (Reuters) - BCE Inc (BCE.TO) (BCE.N), Canada’s biggest telecom company, said on Wednesday that it has made sharp cuts to its work force while it reduces spending on real estate, consulting, and advertising agencies.

Montreal-based BCE has reduced its staff to 41,000 from 44,200 in June, and cut the number of ad agencies it uses to 11 from 47, Chief Executive George Cope said in a presentation to analysts in Toronto following the release of the company’s quarterly results.

A C$34.8 billion ($28.06 billion) deal by a group of private-equity investors to take BCE private collapsed in December. ($1=$1.24 Canadian) (Reporting by Wojtek Dabrowski, writing by Susan Taylor; editing by Peter Galloway)
