Feb 3 (Reuters) - JDS Uniphase Corp JDSU.O JDU.TO posted a quarterly profit that beat estimates, helped by a surge in revenue from its communications and commercial optical products segment, sending its shares up 18 percent in after-market trade.
The company, which provides broadband and optical communication components to various industries, expects non-GAAP revenue of $440-$460 million in the third quarter.
For the second quarter ended Jan. 1, net income was $23.6 million, or 10 cents per share, compared with net loss of $19.5 million, or 9 cents per share, a year ago.
Adjusted earnings was 29 cents per share, up from 12 cents apiece a year ago.
Revenue rose 38 percent to $473.5 million. The communications and commercial optical products division posted a 70 percent increase in quarterly revenue of $191.1 million.
Analysts on average were expecting the company to earn 19 cents per share on revenue of $438.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Shares of Milpitas, California-based JDS rose 18 percent to $21.07 in trading after the bell. They closed at $17.93 on Thursday on Nasdaq and at C$17.75 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
