The Philadelphia Eagles signed former New York Jets and Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg, who took part in the team’s Monday morning practice.

He joins a crowded quarterback room for the Eagles.

Carson Wentz, coming off a season-ending knee injury, and Nick Foles, who led the team to a Super Bowl win, are entrenched in the top two spots. The third-string quarterback from the 2017 team, Nate Sudfeld, also remains on the roster.

The Jets selected Hackenberg with the No. 51 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Despite the team’s woes at the position, he never saw action in a regular-season game.

Hackenberg’s preseason statistics were not inspiring. In 2016, he completed just 17 of 47 passes for 159 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. The following summer, the numbers improved slightly: 42 completions in 74 pass attempts for 372 yards, with two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

The Jets drafted former USC quarterback Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick in April in the NFL draft, re-signed veteran Josh McCown and added free agent Teddy Bridgewater. That left Hackenberg as the odd man out, and the Jets traded him to Oakland. Three weeks later, the Raiders cut him.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson has experience reviving careers at the position and developing young prospects. In 2016, rookie Wentz became an MVP candidate. Last season, retread Foles became Super Bowl MVP. He also previously coached Alex Smith and Michael Vick.
