Top 25 roundup: No. 4 San Diego St. downs UNLV to go 21-0

Malachi Flynn scored 21 points and Trey Pulliam added a career-high 18 points as unbeaten and fourth-ranked San Diego State broke the school and Mountain West record for best start to a season with a 71-67 victory over UNLV on Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas.

The 21-0 start broke the previous record set by the Kawhi Leonard-led 2010-11 San Diego State squad that went on to finish 34-3 and advance to the Sweet 16 where it lost to eventual national champion UConn 74-67. The 2013-14 Aztecs squad also had a 20-game winning streak en route to a Sweet 16 loss to Arizona.

Jordan Schakel finished with 11 points and Yanni Wetzell had eight points and eight rebounds for the Aztecs (21-0, 10-0), who won their fifth straight game over UNLV and 16th in the last 17 meetings with the Runnin’ Rebels.

No. 11 Michigan State 70, Minnesota 52

Cassius Winston had 18 points and eight assists and the Spartans cruised past the host Golden Gophers in a Big Ten Conference matchup Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis.

Xavier Tillman added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Michigan State (15-5, 7-2 Big Ten), which won for the 10th time in the past 12 games. Rocket Watts had 10 points and Aaron Henry scored nine off the bench.

Daniel Oturu finished with 19 points to lead the Golden Gophers, and Gabe Kalscheur scored 15. Minnesota (11-9, 5-5) lost at home for the first time since Nov. 29 against DePaul.

No. 12 Oregon 96, UCLA 75

Chris Duarte scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Ducks to a win over the Bruins and a home sweep of the Los Angeles Pac-12 schools in Eugene, Ore.

Duarte scored 20 of his points in a first half in which the Ducks (17-4, 6-2 Pac-12) forced 14 turnovers. Payton Pritchard added 19 points in his 130th consecutive start and the Ducks improved to 12-0 at home this season.

Jake Kyman’s 20 points led UCLA, which earned a split with the Oregon schools after Thursday’s win at Oregon State. Jalen Hill added 16 points and eight rebounds.

No. 17 Maryland 77, Indiana 76

Jalen Smith scored a career-high 29 points, including the go-ahead basket with 14.5 seconds left, lifting the Terrapins to a win over the Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind.

Down 76-72 with 1:08 left, Maryland forced an Indiana turnover on the press and got a 3-pointer from Aaron Wiggins with 55 seconds remaining to cut Indiana’s lead to 76-75. After an Indiana miss, Smith worked his way inside and scored to give the Terrapins the lead.

Indiana had a chance to win the game in regulation but Trayce Jackson-Davis missed a shot close to the basket as time expired.

No. 25 Houston 68, USF 49

DeJon Jarreau had 12 points and six assists to lead the Cougars past the cold-shooting Bulls in an American Athletic Conference game in Houston.

Fabian White Jr. had 11 points and Chris Harris Jr. contributed nine points and eight rebounds for the Cougars (16-4, 6-1 AAC), who won their fourth straight game.

South Florida, which shot 37.0 percent overall and just 18.8 percent (3 of 16) from 3-point range, did not have a double-digit scorer. Michael Durr and Antun Maricevic each finished with eight points.
