Reports: Mets pick Van Wagenen to be GM

The New York Mets and Brodie Van Wagenen are working toward a deal that will end with the player agent taking over as the team’s general manager, according to multiple reports Saturday.

The Mets chose Van Wagenen over Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom and expect terms of the deal to be finalized by the end of the weekend, according to MLB.com, which adds the hope is for a deal to be announced after the conclusion of the World Series.

Van Wagenen, 44, is a controversial choice for the position, with Mets players Yoenis Cespedes, Jacob deGrom, Todd Frazier and Tim Tebow among the names he’s represented at CAA Baseball. His candidacy has sparked conversations of conflict of interest, and MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark said Friday that players are alarmed by the situation.

“I won’t tell you how many calls or how many texts I have gotten,” Clark said, according to ESPN. “I will simply suggest to you that our membership is paying attention.”

Van Wagenen wouldn’t be the first agent to transfer to a front office role — current Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka was Kobe Bryant’s longtime agent, for example.

Along with Bloom, former Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin was considered for the Mets’ opening before being ruled out as an option earlier this week.

Sandy Alderson, the Mets’ former GM, took a leave of absence from the role in June after revealing his cancer returned in April. Alderson, 70, said then the team’s standing — the Mets went 77-85 this year — didn’t merit a return.

Assistant general manager John Ricco and special assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya ran the team for the remainder of the season.
