Obama says can close Guantanamo while keeping Americans safe

MANILA (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama said on Thursday that that he could close the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba while keeping Americans safe, but acknowledged he would likely face tough resistance from Congress.

Obama - in Manila to attend the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit - said the jail had become a recruiting tool for groups like Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for last week’s Paris attacks.
